My brother and his friends came home today from a trip to the “local” cardshop, arms full of new goodies.
At some point I was dragged away from working on my research to provide insight into a mono-Black Vampire deck. It all spiraled from there.
Now I’m getting back to my work more than an hour later, and I helped build 3 different decks: That mono-Black Vampire deck, with some...

Who Would You Like to Spellsling With?
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates the holiday. For today, I’ve been considering what would make for a truly memorable experience: Kind of like “What dead famous person would you like to meet?” this is my list of a 5-person game of Commander I’d love to experience. It seemed fitting for today, since it is pretty much a wish, just a wish for an event rather than,...
Change to the Change on the Trigger Rules →
Check out this forum post by Matt Tabak that details the upcoming changes to the rules. Ignore the Channel Fireball post and most information about it.
Or, if you’re too lazy for that, this snippet:
“1. If you forget a trigger that benefits you, you’re unlikely to be penalized for it ouside [sic] of missing out on the effect. There’s also little reason to alert a judge...

Knowing is Half the Battle: APNAP
I’m out of town for the holidays, and I don’t believe any of the local card shops run Commander nights (I think they only do FNM and Pre/Releases, which is disappointing; the shop in town probably would have done Commander if they hadn’t closed this year). I’ll try to play 1v1 with my brother, maybe even teach him and his friends Commander and Archenemy, and get some...

They’ve made it pretty unlikely they’ll do multicolour in Innistrad block, it’s hard to say for sure about AVR, but I highly doubt the small set…

New Rule for Competitive Events →
mtgathering:
All Magic players know the difference between mandatory triggers and optional triggers. A great example of the difference is Soul Warden and Soul’s Attendant. Normally, if you miss the trigger for Soul Warden, whose ability is mandatory, you should retroactively fix the life totals as soon…

“An idea Since your deck is working off of sacrificing creatures to do things creature recursion would be a great help for your deck and you would not be hurting to much. you could use sheoldred to bring back w/e you sacrifice.”

“I’d like to point out the ‘very skewed metagame’ remark as being undervalued here. Personal experience from playing WAY TOO MUCH EDH has lead me to believe that most people have a very skewed metagame in the format. A lot of players play for cost-efficiency, not wanting to spend a huge wad of cash. These people probably don’t have tons of field wipes, good...

Commander Deck Skeleton
Getting into Commander can be really difficult for newer players who aren’t used to limiting themselves to colors based on color identity, choosing a legendary creature to perhaps build the deck around, and building around the additional 40 cards and the singleton rule. I’ve read lots of places in forums where these players ask for analyses of the number of lands to run. Here I would...

I’d like to do an art analysis for the last few years. I’d like to say Magic has come a long way since Earthbind, but I want the statistics to back that up. I did just look over every piece of artwork in Innistrad though. By my count, I noted 17 depictions of women showing cleavage, leg, or lots of bare shoulder, and I was generous in my count. Most of them were on black or...

When I see rulings to rules questions our Commander games present as easily accessible as on Gatherer, I begin to wish I had a Smart Phone to resolve these things. At least this time our decision didn’t negatively affect me, but it’s still upsetting to know we screwed up.

Duels12 Multiplayer: Missing 1 Thing
I was playing Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 4-player free-for-all earlier tonight, and I noticed something: Far too often it seems to me that the computer players just default to attacking me rather than each other. For instance, with one player out already, a computer attacking me for lethal rather than lowering the life total of the opponent, leaving itself open to lose on the very next...

With the Christmas season already here and people are scrambling to buy gifts and make donations to make it seem like they care all year round, I’d like to voice my own opinion on charities. We all hear about major organizations that call themselves charities: Salvation Army, Toys for Tots,…

Build-A-Card 6
I’m out of town visiting my girlfriend. Exams are next week (as of this post’s publishing, my last just finished), so I really should be studying, but I just finished a long second day of grading yesterday’s quizzes for the undergraduate class for which I’m the teaching assistant, so I don’t feel much like doing more work. I hope I will have enough time after the...
Top 5: Wedges
I find myself with some free time, so I figured I should finish what I started. Before I’ve listed the colors, allied pairs, enemy pairs, and slices/shards in the order of my preference, so I might as well do so for Wedges. Maybe one day there’ll be enough 4-color cards that I can do a list for those too, but as of now only 1 card for each 4-color combination isn’t enough for...
The Great Myr Debate Settled by Mark Rosewater
prsntypething: I really need an answer to this, my group and I have been debating this since the first mirodin block came out so please tell us once and for all... Is myr pronounced "mer" like merfolk or "meer" like meerkat?
Mark Rosewater: Meer as in “rhymes with deer”.
Me: I didn't know this one was up for debate, but I guess I can see it now. Just not "mer;" I understand "Mire." Although I can certainly see how a lot of names in Magic could be imagined one way by R&D and pronounced another by the masses. Like Garruk - Gah-rook or Gar-uck? Ulvenwald or Ulwenvald (personally, I prefer the latter)? Maybe these should just be settled in the rulings sections for cards, lol.
Confessionsofapuzzledwizard: The logic behind the "mer" pronunciation is that as R&D themselves have said, the Myr take their name loosely from Myrmidon (mer-mi-don) an ancient greek race of people and the ants they are said to have sprang from, because of the sense that they are numberless and possess no self much like ants. Thus "mer" as that's the root of the term and makes the most sense if you think of the lnguistics behind it. The logic behind "meer" is that MaRo says so (because it's easier to make jokes from), which in the MTG world is a fairly good reason. The logic behind "mire" is that as fair as I can tell there is none.
Me: If what you say about the Myrmidon is true, then that makes sense. But citing sources is always useful; I presume that could be from a Tokra/Tofu article? As for "mire," it does make sense, as the "y" sound in the English language is much more likely to be pronounced that way than in the Myrmidon way, such as sin the words sky, rhyme, and goodbye. Anyway, like I said, if you're right about where the Myr name came from, then that makes a whole lot of sense. Now I just want to know how to pronounce Garruk.
Anytime you hinder Uril, the Mistalker you deserve a fucking medal.
– Chris Lansdell on CommanderCast episode “Crossover Week IV: Last-Minute Audible.” Lansdell was actually the last-minute audible, which I’m glad for given this epic, and very true, quote. I wish Uril didn’t have hexproof; with his colors, you can play Asceticism or Privileged...
