Embracing Vorthos: Vulshok Refugee
After last week’s marathon of Deck Showcase articles, it feels good to be back onto the regular schedule again. The regular schedule means Embracing Vorthos returns to Wednesdays. Today’s is a card that is kind of odd if you don’t know the flavor: Vulshok Refugee. On first glance he seems very similar to the Couriers of Mirrodin Besieged. Both were {1}{C}{C} ({C} means mana of a...

Archenemy in Duels 2012
I know this is a little behind in the times, but I was reminded recently of the new videogame, and how I was quite interested in it given a certain announcement, and then let down a lot on the final reveal. I wasn’t so interested in the Archenemy format when it was released, but it’s grown on me. I know if I had the money I’d go and grab most of the schemes, but any...

Mystic Speculation: Commander Roundup
Now that the Commander Precons were released and I’ve seen the final decklists, bought one, saw 3 of the 5 in action, and wrote about all of the new cards, it’s the time where I look back on the last two editions of Mystic Speculation and judge how I did. To start off, I misremembered exactly how much I speculated on. This shouldn’t be too surprising to me, as the first one was...

Deck Showcase: Child of Alara Pauper
I’m not going to go into details on how this deck was built, as this one isn’t mine, but I wanted to share it with everyone. There seems to be a growing interest in playing Pauper Commander: That is, every card in your Commander deck must be a common. If you do this literally, that means your commander as well, and you’re left with only 4 commanders that were printed as common,...

Too Many Cards: Why aren't more people excited... →
fuckmonogreenelves: I saw some posts saying that it isn’t as good as Jace, The Mind Sculptor. But, uh, isn’t that a GOOD thing? Exactly my thoughts, and exactly why Magic players are known for being 1st Place Complainers.

Deck Showcase: Political Puppets
I’ve been waiting to write about this deck. It’s probably the one I’ve been most excited to see print and to write about, second only to Heavenly Inferno, the one I actually bought. I think this is quite possibly one of the coolest decks if you build it around Zedruu. It’s nice for players looking to play Group Hug without having to play Phedalgrif or Karona (people play...

Deck Showcase: Mirror Mastery
Unlike with Devour for Power, I did play against this deck, but the player didn’t get Riku often much or make much of an impact on the board (the same goes for me, except for the times I got Pyrohemia on the board, and if I hadn’t been ignored for most of the start of the game to where I had the highest life, no one ever would have considered me a threat, and rightfully so). What I...

Deck Showcase: Devour for Power
[Source] This deck will be the hardest to talk about, as I have little experience with it. At the release I played with Heavenly Inferno, against a Mirror Mastery, Political Puppets, and 2 other Heavenly Inferno players. At least with Counterpunch I had to seriously look at it to decide if I was going to get it. I looked at Devour for Power for a little bit, to help my friend who was split on...

Deck Showcase: Counterpunch
[Source] This was the other deck I was considering getting, partially out of hopes that the sweet art and “Fungus Shaman” types on Ghave that I had known since the images of the boxes had been spoiled would be amazing, and partially because I thought this deck would have the White/Black Legend. Well, I was right on two counts. However, I’m a little disappointed that Wizards...

Deck Showcase: Heavenly Inferno
[Source] It took me way too long, but I finally made up my mind to get the Heavenly Inferno deck. I actually have to thank my younger brother for being the deciding factor. At the release event we had 3 pods of 4 or 5 players each. Unfortunately my pod included all three players at the store who bought Heavenly Inferno. I would have preferred a less randomized pod formation that tried to...

Build-a-Card 4: Special...
Wow, I can’t believe Commander Precons officially go on sale today! Tomorrow I leave work a little early to play out my new deck for the first time. Anyway, this isn’t about Commander Precons, though some of the Legends in the Precons inspired some of the cards I’ll post here. There were a couple cards I created that I never showcased, I think because I settled on showing off 15...

Embracing Vorthos: Phyrexian Ingestor
As a forewarning, it is possible I won’t do one next week, as I am going to try and cover a Commander Precon each day. I wanted to cover a few New Phyrexia cards before I got busy with other interests, but now I’ve committed myself to a card I won’t have time for before Commander Precon week, so I’ll have to return to New Phyrexia one last time in two weeks, before playing...

I’m beginning to wish more things in life functioned like Tumblr. For instance, if at 10am I have something I wish to text someone about, but I know they sleep in until noonish, but I know with my terrible memory by then I’d forget to send it, I would be able to Queue a text to that person to send right then.

Easy as Pie: One More Piece?
A while ago, someone else and myself asked Mark Rosewater questions about a possible 6th color. Soon ihititwithmyaxe posted a link to a Daily MtG article that discussed the debate for “Purple” in Planar Chaos. ihititwithmyaxe: The life, death, and lessons of Purple Magic from the Planar Chaos design team’s recount. Ghave, Where are You?
All of the new legendary creatures for the precons have been spoiled…except for Ghave. His art is sweet, he’s BGW, he’s a fungus, and he comes into play with four or five counters. All of that has been known since April. Today’s spoiler in The Week that Was just is not as exciting as the main Legendary creature for one of the Precons. As luck would have it, the BGW...

Top 5: My Favorite Allied Color Pairs
When I first made this blog I just posted some about my favorite sets, colors, etc. I always wanted to go back and do one about color combinations. This time I’d like to throw out some of my favorite cards from the colors as well, even for those listed lower on the list. I’ll start with allied color pairs, which would leave me enemy color pairs, shards, and wedges. Wedges will wait to...

Mana-Sinking Feeling
foilfleshformer: I’m not sure that Join Forces is a good idea. I’m really excited for the Commander decks.  But I’m afraid that cards that are deliberately designed for multiplayer formats are going to be a lot more powerful than anticipated.  At first, Join Forces seems like a cool mechanic that lets the whole table get ahead.  But it’s never going to be played like that.  It’s not going to...

Embracing Vorthos: Fresh Meat
This week I’d like to talk about another perhaps obvious card: I’ve actually noticed that most of these are kind of obvious. However, as I mentioned before, being obvious doesn’t prevent Vorthos from appreciating the flavor. Fresh Meat is an instant version of the elf Caller of the Claw. The elf costs less, but that’s because he brings in 2/2 bears, not 3/3 beasts....
