"Why Does Wizards Keep Making Crap Cards?"
Today marks Innistrad’s Release Date! (Go ahead and cheer, I am). That’s exciting and all, but today is business-as-usual. For a while now I’ve wanted to write an article about “jank” cards, and now I’ll finally do so.
So why is Wizards ripping us off?
Face it, there is some validity to being annoyed when you open a booster pack and not one card in there, even...

Embracing Vorthos: Flavor Fail - Werebear
In honor of Innistrad’s Release in two days, I chose for today’s Embracing Vorthos a card with a lot of similarities.
For one, the card has my favorite graveyard mechanic: Threshold. I bet it’s for the same reason that I like Metalcraft, in that they are elegant mechanics that you become activated when a preset standard is met.
Werebear is a Druid Bear (Human as well with...
After the Game Doubleheader: Commander 9/22 and...
Commander’s theme this week: So much for a “Social Contract.” (I knew the Commander Rules Committee’s idea was a pipe-dream that wouldn’t work in all situations, but until now this opinion of mine was based off of a pessimistic belief of the human nature, not from experience - now I have a valid example).
Commander 9/22
So, technically this post is a tripleheader,...

The Threat to Maximum Hand Size
OMG… Tomorrow is the Innistrad Prerelease! I only go to one event each expansion set (are there people who go to both? Probably, but I can’t afford that), assuming I can make one, and I decided I am going to the Prerelease because I prefer that event’s promo. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. That’s tomorrow. For now, I’ve been wanting to put in my two...

Embracing Vorthos: Intrepid Hero
This is one of my favorite pieces of removal. I like repeated removal, and this costs less to use than Visara the Dreadful and doesn’t require the target to tap like Royal Assassin. Better yet, why not use both, like I do in my Kaalia deck?
I also enjoy this limitation on White removal. Aside from O-Ring-type effects, where White’s removal is only temporary, the “We...

Commander 9/15: Less is More
Theme of this week: If only there had been 1 more player…
I love my decks, and they have their moments where they rock quite well (e.g. Privileged Position + Sterling Grove in Rafiq tends to scare people even if I’m not doing too much with it). My decks can be tough when underestimated; I underestimate them myself, and when my opponents do so I tend to win. They often slug along just...

Twenty-Six Too Many: Quest for Renewal: Commander... →
26toomany:
“The only issue I have with the system is that it is purely cosmetic.”
Well, usually the League Points come with an actual League of a designated number of weeks (like 8 weeks, then after that the next League starts and in between the points can be adjusted), and the winner of the League wins something. This is how Armada Games does it, but to be honest I don’t...

MtG Grab Bags on eBay
I’m selling Grab Bags on eBay. For $5 (including shipping) you get 25 cards, including a nonbasic land and at least one rare. Technically you get 26 cards because I throw in a token, too.
Right now the cards range from 4th Edition to New Phyrexia / M12. Although the Bags are pretty much randomly made, I made sure each included a few newer cards as well, ranging from about 4 to half the...
Rebound: Point: Commander Color Identity Sucks →
castfromexile:
The Commander Color Identity Rule is a part of the format that has not received much attention over the years. For those who do not know, the rule (#3 on the official list) reads
A card’s colour identity is its colour plus the colour of any mana symbols in the card’s rules text. A card’s…
This is an article from a little bit back that was the Part 1 to my Counterpoint...

Quest for Renewal: Commander League Point Systems
The local card shop I attend has what I consider a great system for Commander. You show up, you pay a $1 buy-in, and depending on the number of players we tend to get seated in pods of 4-6. The player who wins receives 50% of the total buy-in for that pod. Getting $3 or less is a decent incentive to win, allowing you to pick up some of the cheaper cards you may want, buy a few grab bags, pay for...
Rooster Teeth (producers of Red vs. Blue... →
And conclude that it was Gizmodo being traffic whores and just trying to get visits to their site. Gizmodo does indeed come across as the grade school troublemaker: Any attention is “good” attention to them.
Anyway, I just thought it was funny that the podcast, which is technically about videogames but really will talk about anything, hit on this discussion (albeit for a split...

Embracing Vorthos: Canyon Minotaur
By now you’ve probably noticed I like to throw curve-balls with these Embracing Vorthos posts. Not only is Canyon Minotaur a functional reprint of a card many players are already tired of seeing outside of a pool for Limited, but it doesn’t seem flavorful at first glance, aside from its slightly funny flavor text.
It might not be flavorful in its own right, but when compared to Hill...
Maniacal Machinations
26toomany:
I was really liking Innistrad until I saw this card get spoiled:
CURSE YOU, MARO!!!
I doubt your opponents will run this. However, it can be your protection from your own Dreamborn Muse…

Deck Showcase: Farm Themed Commander
I don’t have an After the Game report today, as I went home this weekend to celebrate my friend’s return from Afghanistan. He’s not really into Magic, so there wasn’t time in between drinking, swimming, swimming and drinking, and bonfires to sling some cards to talk about. So instead I’d like to talk about an interesting deck idea Sheldon Mennery dropped in two of his...

Top 5 Slices (a.k.a. Shards)
Since I’ve ranked the colors, allied color pairs, and enemy color pairs by my personal preference, I’m on to the first group of three-color cards: The Slices/Shards, the ones that are in a row on the color pie.
5.White/Blue/Black. Someone has to be last. I like Esper, because their flavor is cool, but the color combination itself just clearly isn’t my favorite. The more recent...

Embracing Vorthos: Karona, False God
After last week’s touch into the darker side of Flavor, let’s get back to normal. I’m sure in the future I can find a few more Fails around Gatherer’s thousands of cards, but for now, let’s Embrace Flavor’s Hits rather than its misses.
A lot of people hate on this card. As a fan of Akroma, part of the whole triad that made Karona, I can understand. [Just to...

After the Game: Commander 9/1
Well, this is a little embarrassing. My ability to remember events in games has drastically decreased since I started these posts. I knew when I decided to write about them that without taking notes it’d be difficult for me to write the articles in any cohesive manner, but a) I took notes once and that actually didn’t help all that much as I just forget that I’m supposed to be...
Commander and the Store Locator
I read somewhere earlier in the summer that many stores in the Eastern United States were note using Wizard’s Store Locator for Multiplayer Events. The writer assumed they must do something Commander related, given its release, but that the stores just weren’t using this free way to get more traffic to their store.
I really hope the issue is that they just don’t use the system...

I really just need to read the entire...
Earlier this year I had to inform all of the people I play with outside of the card shop of rule 800.6, right after this one I just discovered. That one let us know that the player who goes first still draws, unlike in duels, which completely changes whether or not you want to go first in multiplayer.
I just noticed this one:
“800.5. In a multiplayer game, the first time a player takes a...
The Other Women of Bagic: Dating a [Magic] Player... →
Such a great article. She talks about dating Aaron when he was a Pro Magic Player, but it really extends to any one-sided Magic relationship. My girlfriend plays Magic, but not to the extent I do, like how I constantly say “Just one more deck,” or “I almost have all the cards I want,” and since I’m constantly saying that I’m sure wrong half the time, which...

This Old Deck: Kaalia's Vast and the Furious
I didn’t use to name my decks, but once I started using tappedout.net, I did, and now I can’t help cheesy names if I come up with them. This one playing off “Vast” sounding like “Fast,” and sounding like the title of another film series that just won’t die.
Although I’ve been playing Kaalia for quite some time, I feel it’s finally ...
