Huh, a new Planeswalker in a Core Set. I’ll be damned.

To be honest, I don’t mind being wrong here. Sure, I said they’d never do it, that new Planeswalkers are better suited for Expert-level sets. I’m still partially right, though:

There are two types of new Planeswalker cards for old Planeswalkers: 1) The changed man/woman (i.e. Ajani’s earlier days compared to now, Sarkhan gone crazy, and Tezzeret resurrected as Bolas’ um, we’ll go with tool); and 2) The same character in terms of life experiences, only the new card represents other abilities since, after all, there is only so much room on a single Magic card to represent everything these people can do (see: Every second version of a planeswalker that didn’t change colors from the original). Note that whether they change colors or stay the same does not determine which one they fall into: I wouldn’t be surprised if Liliana remains mono-Black in Innistrad, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if the new card represents her more powerful or more varied abilities after retrieving the Chain Veil.

Now, if they print a Green/Black Garruk in M12 rather than the Lorwyn original, then this entire explanation would be thrown out the window.
